Integrative healthcare is my second vocation. While enjoying a career as a mechanical engineer and independent contractor for companies like General Motors and John Deere, I had a serious health issue that altered my life. Through my healthcare journey, I wondered if engineering principles and a holistic approach might help me heal. Engineering is the art of understanding, applying, and respecting the fundamental laws of nature. The principles of human physiology are the ultimate engineering puzzle. To quote Queen Elizabeth II, “At its heart, engineering is about using science to find creative, practical solutions.” Engineering fundamentals and this philosophy fit perfectly with the integrative healthcare model which seeks to combine the best of Western scientific medicine with a broader understanding of the nature of illness, healing, and wellness. More specifically, the natural laws of health and wellness must incorporate an appreciation for the requirements and limits of biology and chemistry. The process by which one applies this knowledge is dubbed functional medicine. Functional medicine seeks to identify and address the root causes of disease through an understanding of body systems and how they integrate and work together with the whole body. The implementation of this model requires a cooperative working relationship between the physician, the integrative practitioner, and the patient. Personally, I believe the best integrative therapies utilize multiple modes of healing. Therefore, I am dual licensed in both Dietetics and Nutrition as well as Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.
